Spirituality of the Ancient Celtic Church

WeThe Ancient Celtic Church is based on the historical Celtic church, which has developed out of early Christianity and Druidism. Saint Columcille said: “My druid is Christ, the Son of God.” The theology of the Oriental Orthodox Church and the Desert Fathers has influenced the Celtic church, but today we are also open to the arguments of the reformation. The Celtic church regards the Apostle John as her founder as opposed to the Church of Rome. But what does this mean for the spirituality of the Ancient Celtic Church today? We try to give an answer to this question in the following 7 paragraphs. But this is not meant to be a dogma or a strict belief.

1.       We try to get in contact with god in nature and belief, that god reveals himself in the immanence and transcendence Especially at the so called Thin Places we are aware that the otherworld is near by.

2.       We cultivate spiritual friendship following the ideal of the Anam Cara, the soul friend, which can be seen as a confessor or as we prefer today as spiritual friend and religious companion. We reject rigid hierarchies and if possible the use of titles.

3.       We express our beliefs in poetry, music and the arts and carry its beauty into life.

4.       We understand life as pilgrimage, symbolically and practically. Learning and teaching belongs to this path. We offer training programs and promote our members to become ministers themselves and we don´t differentiate by gender, race or nationality.

5.      We regard creation and man are fundamentally good and as Orginal Blessing.

6.       Regarding the prayer practice and the liturgy we follow the tradition of the Celtic church and the land we live in.

7.       We reserve time for silence and contemplation.
